ELECTROMYOGRAPHY AND NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES

What is Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies?

Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (EMG/NCS) are used to determine the function and health of the nervous system, primarily muscles and nerves.  The testing is performed to help in the diagnosis and treatment of patients who have symptoms of numbness, tingling, pain, weakness, muscle cramping, or muscle wasting.

What disorders may be diagnosed by EMG and NCS?

Disorders such as pinched nerves like carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerve roots in the neck or back (radiculopathies), numbness or burning of the feet or hands caused by diabetic or other peripheral neuropathies, muscle weakness secondary to muscle diseases (myopathies), and diseases of the motor neurons such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

What does the test consist of?

The test consists of two parts:

1)      Nerve Conduction Studies determine how well the body’s electrical signals travel through nerves.  The test consists of placing electrical stimuli at one or more sites along a nerve most commonly in the arm or leg.   This is usually felt as a mild shock or tingling sensation.

2)   Electromyography determines if there are problems with muscle function. The test consists of placing a very fine hair like electrode in the muscle to see if any problems are present.

How long does the test take?

The test usually takes an average of 30 to 45 minutes.

How do I prepare for the test?

You may eat and drink before the test and take your normal medications.

DO NOT apply oils or lotions to your body the day of the test.
